Gujjar stir: 4,500 paramilitary personnel rushed to Rajasthan

New Delhi: 4,500 paramilitary personnel have been despatched to Rajasthan by the Centre to assist the state government in handling the Gujjar agitation that has hit traffic on the Delhi-Mumbai rail route and a national highway for the eighth day on Thursday.While some of the security personnel have already reached Rajasthan, the rest will bearriving in batches, a Home Ministry official said here.The paramilitary personnel, drawn mostly from CRPF and BSF, are being sent from different parts of the country.Gujjar protesters continued to block Delhi-Mumbai rail route and Jaipur-Agra national highway for the eighth day today and efforts are on through negotiations to resolve the stand-off.The agitators have been blocking rail tracks and roads in three districts for a week now to press for five per cent quota in government jobs. Members of the community are squatting on the railway track in Pilukapura in Bharatpur, on NH-11 at Sikandara in Dausa and a state highway in Sawaimadhopur.Karauli district is also affected by the agitation. The number of protesters increased last night on the tracks that included large number of women and children who were armed with sticks and batons. Meanwhile, Gujjar-government talks are resuming today to discuss on a new formula for 5 per cent reservation though itis not clear whether Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla would be participating in the meeting.

Maggi noodles likely to face ban in India, FSSAI orders sample examination

New Delhi: All the Maggi lovers will now have to bear this bad news. Reports suggest that Nestle Maggi is likely to face ban in the country because of the harmful chemicals found in it.According to reports, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered to examine the samples of Maggi in the country. FSSAI took the action after the state food department reported about the presence of harmful chemicals in the noodles.The two-minute 'Maggi' noodles came under regulatory scanner after samples collected in some parts of Uttar Pradesh were tested in the lab and results showed that it contains high amount of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead.Shockingly, it has been found that Maggi contains 17 parts per million lead, while the permissible limit is only 0.01 ppm. Even the content of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in it was found at levels above the dangerous mark.UP Food Regulatory Authority examined that chemical monosodium glutamate (MSG) in Maggi noodles was higher than the prescribed limit. On the other hand, thecompany clarified about the amount of lead in Maggi, claiming that it is negligibleand amounts to less than 1 per cent.

90,000 Indian students apply for US visa, 4,000 make the cut

New Delhi: The number of student visa applications for theUnited Stateshas registered a 60 per cent increase this year with a whopping 90,000 applicants, of whom only about 4,000 could make the cut.According to an official statement, around 4,000 students managed to get student visa which saw over 90,000 applicants, a number which doubled at the US embassy and consulates, especially in Mumbai andHyderabad, over the last 12 months."The US Embassy in Delhi, and ConsulatesGeneral in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai, opened their doors on today to over 4,000 Indian students who applied for visas to pursue education in the United States," it said.The students will join a growing league of their counterparts in the US, which stands at nearly 103,000 at present, making them the second largest group of foreign students in the country after China."Student visa applications across India increased 60 percent last year. Consular officers approve the vast majority of student visa applications. 78 per cent of Indian students opt to study Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) fields," the US Embassy said.According to the embassy, in terms of popularity of study disciplines among the applicants, engineering tops the chart, followed by computer science."Last year Indian students in the United States contributed USD 3.3 billion to the US economy," it said.Congratulating the successful applicants, US Ambassador to India Richard Verma said, "Indian students are a great asset to United States universities and colleges. Both countries benefit greatly when our students study and learn together."On the occasion, celebrated as Student Visa Day, the embassy and the consulates treated the applicants to an informative morning in a festive, collegiate atmosphere, with the consulates playing music ranging from college songs to pop music."It has been an honour to meet India's future leaders today at Student Visa Day. I am continually impressed by the calibre ofIndian students that I meet, and amazed by what they contribute to both India and the world," Ambassador Verma remarked after talking with the applicants here.
